Pay Range: $19.10-20.26/hour              
Principal Objective
Under the direct supervision of the  Aquatics Coordinator and the Aquatics Manager/Director , the Community Center Swim Instructor Supervisor provides a leadership presence for all Swim Instructors working during their shift, and is the point person for resolving daily Swim School specific issues. They are responsible for providing swim instruction expertise, wisdom, and best practices, ensuring all instructors, swimmers, and parents feel informed and comfortable in and around water and at the Community Center. 
Principal Roles and Responsibilities 
  • Supervisor/Encourager: In addition to teaching, throughout their shift: supervise, meet the swim instructor team needs, encourage excellent service to members; ensure there is always a supervisor or aquatics leadership available to help the team when you are unavailable; plan and implement evaluation and development process for Swim Instructor Team. Provide a physical leadership presence, help resolve any swim lesson issues, schedule conflicts, member complaints, or facility needs.  
  • Trainer: Create weekly schedules based on enrollments, create monthly instructor schedules, and handle shift trade requests. Responsible for assisting the Aquatics Program Lead and Aquatics Manager, and fellow supervisors in the planning and implementation of in-service training. Works closely with other supervisors and the Aquatics Program Lead to ensure clear communication and follow through. Collaborates with the Aquatics Program lead to conduct midsummer reviews and exit interviews. 
  • Swim Instructor Team Leader: lead the Center’s Community by exemplifying character and and a heart of service; instruct with confidence, consistency and love; communicate clearly and with confidence to swimmers and families; listen for and support goals and needs of swimmers and families; learn, honor and enforce facility rules at all times (pool, weight room, and gym); write incident reports when necessary. 
  • Teammate: be available to work as scheduled for the entire season (provide consistency for the swimmers); if a sub is needed, be 100% responsible for finding the sub or be at work as scheduled; be willing and available to sub for others; encourage teammates; address inner-team issues directly, immediately and respectfully; work in collaboration with the Adult Swim Workout Team, The Youth Aquatics Fitness Team, Center Summer Camp, Swim School, Facilities Team, and other Center leaders and to continue to build an excellent aquatics facility and program.
  • Instructor: Help students (ages 3-12) learn water safety and proper swimming technique. Learn every swimmer’s name and get to know them; be reliable, trustworthy, caring, and accepting; prioritize swimmer’s experience over personal issues; be fun and playful; give positive feedback often. Be specific and clear when giving progress reports to students and families. Know and implement the instructor handbook.
  • Student: Before starting job: complete necessary training for payroll, water safety/instruction and Lifeguard Certification; throughout summer: attend all meetings and trainings; strive to learn and grow as an instructor and as an individual.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Certifications: certified Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent.; completion of PCC’s Swim School Training.
  • Leadership: ability to lead by example, help teammates learn, and be a convincing authority on the topics of water safety, swim technique, proper instruction techniques, and instilling the joy of swimming.
  • Experience: 16 years or older; strong swimming and water survival skills; Experience working with children preferred; swim instruction experience preferred (at least 1 year Center experience preferred).
  • Schedule: Commit to working 8 out of the 10 weeks of summer and attend all required training meetings throughout the summer.
Physical Requirements: This job requires a person to be in the water and in the sun for the majority of the time spent working. Personal protective equipment for sun exposure is mandatory (sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc). Swim instructors must be able to hold children (ages 3-12) in the water, stand in the water, be able to swim 300 yards continuously without stopping (breaststroke or freestyle), and tread water for 2 minutes without the use of arms. Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds often.
Compensation: $19.10 - $20.26 per hour
