PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE
The Swim School Instructor provides excellent water safety and swim technique instruction to children while creating a memorable and enriching experience. Swim lessons follow a semi-private model (2:1 ratio) using the Peninsula Community Center Swim School Curriculum.

PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports directly to the On Deck Supervisor(s) and collaborates closely with the Aquatics Coordinator, Aquatics Program Manager, and fellow swim instructors. They also engage with parents, guardians, and students to foster a positive and supportive learning environment. Strong communication and teamwork with all aquatics and center staff are essential to ensuring a high-quality swim program.
WORKWEEK
- Commit to working 7 out of the 9 weeks of summer and attend all required training meetings throughout the summer, including weekly in-service training.
- Work one summer holiday (Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day) and one of the following event dates: June 21st or July 26th.
- Participate in mandatory bonfires on June 8th, June 30th, and August 3rd.
- Hours and shifts vary, Weekly hours range: 6-14 hours.
SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach water safety and swimming techniques to students (ages 3+) and adhere to the Swim School Instructor Handbook.
- Be punctual and reliable; if a sub is needed, take full responsibility for arranging coverage.
- Be willing and available to substitute for others.
- Know and be ready to execute the facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Escalate concerns to the On Deck Supervisor, Aquatics Coordinator, or Aquatics Program Manager as needed.
- Collaborate with all aquatics and center staff to enhance the overall experience for members and guests.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
- American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
- Must be at least 15 years old with strong swimming skills.
- Prior swim team coaching and swim instructor experience preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be in the water and sun for extended periods.
- Must be able to hold children (ages 3-12) in the water, stand in the water, swim 300 yards continuously (breaststroke or freestyle), and tread water for two minutes without using arms.
- Must be able to perform all American Red Cross Lifeguard rescue skills, including but not limited to diving up to 12 feet, treading water for extended periods, CPR, rescue breathing, in-water spinal backboarding, and using an AED.
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds frequently.
- DOJ background clearance required.
- Must adhere to and model PCC’s Safe Church policies.
